The nature of what I do brings to me to far and wide places, and while I love that, getting there has always been the part of travel that I haven’t loved, or enjoyed for that matter admittedly. Flying always gave me anxiety, and I can’t say I am still totally comfortable with it, but I have found ways to help myself try to enjoy it. Neal is completely opposite, he’s cool as a cucumber, haha! Being able to fly is such a blessing, and I try more and more now to relax and enjoy the ride. Long flights can be tough for me (anxiety aside) because I feel constrained in an area for hours and hours and that can take a toll on my muscles, skin, etc. On our recent trip to Europe, I felt as if the hours flew and I hadn’t even noticed! I’ve got a few tips on how to really enjoy a long flight, because after all the journey gets you to your dream destination…
BRING YOUR ENTERTAINMENT:
Sometimes airlines don’t have screens or perhaps movies you really like. I recommend bringing an array of different entertainment to switch things up. I personally can’t watch movies back to back on a long flight. I like to bring along music, a good book and an iPad with my shows or movies loaded up on it! I like to create playlists on my phone that help me sleep, help wake me up and get me excited for landing etc. If there’s anything I love flights for, it’s that I can get a lot of reading done and for some reason I soak in the messages a lot more than I do when I’m just at home. I bring a notebook with me everywhere I go because I love to make lists, but ideas also come to me, and I like to have somewhere to jot them down. Coming prepared with these options helps me avoid becoming bored, and the variety keeps it interesting.
DINE WELL:
On our flight home from Europe with Air Transat (link to book our trip here), we pre-ordered our meals from the new Daniel Vézina menu (a renowned Quebec chef). Getting a gourmet, warm meal on a long travel day is the most comforting thing! We really enjoyed this, and the food was delicious! I had the Vegetable Moussaka with a glass of red wine and it was amazing. If you’re on a transatlantic flight, or flights to the south (as of July 1), I highly recommend going with this meal option.
Here’s what else is on the Daniel Vézina menu:
- Chicken ragout with lemon zest and seasonal vegetables
- Duck confit lasagna with spinach and a sherry and foie gras emulsion
- Braised leg of lamb with spices, maple syrup and Indian vegetable curry
- Sweet potato gnocchi with red wine bolognese, spinach pesto and Parmesan shavings
- Vegetarian moussaka with grilled vegetables, creamed goat cheese, tomato and red pepper coulis
- Vegan risotto with rice cream, red pepper coulis and diced root vegetables with fennel
STAY COZY:
I always get cold on flights, especially my feet! Even if i’m wearing sandals, I’ll bring a fuzzy pair of socks with me in my bag to throw on and I wear compression socks for extra long flights to keep my blood circulation flowing. I don’t play around with circulation, haha! Sitting sedentary for that many hours, all of your blood goes to your feet and it’s not healthy, so I listened to my physical massage therapist and got myself a pair of these bad boys! I also love bringing a cashmere scarf with me to wrap myself up in and snooze.
IN-FLIGHT SKINCARE:
Since you’ll have plenty of time on your hands, why not give yourself some in-flight skin treatments? My skin gets really dehydrated and dry on a flight, so this is more of an essential for me than it is an excuse to pass time, but I’ve also found it fun! You might totally scare the person next to you by putting on a crazy sheet mask, but you will land with glowing skin, so that’s a good trade in my books! I love overnight masks, they go on clear and you can take a nap while it soaks in to your skin. Then pop into the restroom wash it off and then follow up with a vitamin enriched face oil, and a hydrating moisturizer.
PICK THE BEST AIRLINES:
We’ve been exploring on Air Transat quite a bit this year, and Neal and I have really enjoyed it! From the customer service to the comfort of going Option Plus. You get priority check-in, extra checked baggage allowance (helpful for the fashion bloggers and photographers, haha), priority boarding and baggage handling (we were among the first to get our luggage at our destination, so not waiting at the belt for yours to come off the plane) and so many more perks! It truly makes travelling a lot more enjoyable when you have these advantages. They do have Club Class as well which is their “first class” option.
I hope these tips were helpful, I know they’ve made travelling much more enjoyable for me and I’ve slowly come to like flying more over the years. Safe travels! XOXO
